The mobility landscape is truly changing. From car-sharing to electric vehicles, it seems we are definitely walking into a transportation revolution. And we are excited about this!
However, electric vehicles are nothing new. The first ones were created in the late 1800 and early 1900s. According to the American Census, 28 percent of all cars produced in the US in 1900 were electric, but somewhere around the way, they lost their popularity. By 1935, the internal-combustion engine had won the battle and would rule the automotive industry for decades to come.
Even though electric cars are nothing new, they seem to be more relevant now than never before. According to the annual State of Global Air Report, air pollution contributed to more than 6 million deaths in 2016, and as we have stated before, cars are a huge part of the problem.
Of course, car sharing is helping to solve the issue. According to an article published by Entrepreneur, car sharing can reduce greenhouse gas emissions considerably. Nevertheless, other changes need to be promoted.
Electric cars are playing an extremely important role in this game-changing moment of the industry. Real change seems to be on its way. As stated by Next Green Car plug-in cars increased from 3,500 in 2013 to more than 182,000 by the end of October 2018 and it is expected to grow a lot more.
Some cities around the world have already committed to switching to electric buses in the main bus routes. For instance, a three-year innovation project has started in the UK. This is the world’s biggest trial of commercial electric vehicles and has been approved by UK energy regulator, Ofgem. The goal is to test and implement the best approaches to the EV rollout for commercial enterprises.
Another relevant example takes place in Glasgow. Its biggest bus company, First Glasgow announced its plans to invest in another 75 new ultra-low emission vehicles for 2019, which includes £400,000 of investment from the Green Bus Fund.
It is necessary to find alternative modes of transport. As we have stated before, at EYESAFE we believe it is necessary to create an environment that will contribute to the sustainable development of our cities and our planet. This is the reason why we work towards building smart and sustainable cities were all citizens reach a good life quality. We are completely sure that there is incredible potential to improve the air quality of our cities if we work together!
In order to reach the smart and sustainable cities that we so deeply want, it is necessary to take action and get inspired by these new transportation alternatives that will not only benefit ourselves but also the next generations.
